Dar Al Tifel Al Arabi Institution – A Documentary (2018) gives a brief overview of the compelling history of the institution’s establishment. Founded as an orphanage in 1948 by the late Hind al-Husseini, the effort began as a response to a humanitarian crisis. After the tragic massacre of Deir Yasin, al-Husseini generously converted her home into a shelter and nursery for 55 orphaned children, aged 2 to 11 or 12, from Deir Yasin who had wandered to Jerusalem. This initial act of compassion laid the groundwork for what would become a cornerstone of education, culture, heritage, and community support in Jerusalem.
The film (in Arabic) includes archival footage of the earliest days and an audio recording (in English) of al-Husseini recalling the fateful day that led her to establish the orphanage.
Over the years, through the kindness and contributions of numerous supporters and benefactors, al-Husseini was able to expand the school’s facilities, transforming it into a fully-fledged educational and cultural institution with four separate parts: a nursery and kindergarten for girls, a school for girls, a library and cultural institution, Dar Isaaf Al-Nashashibi for Culture, Arts and Literature, and a museum, Dar Al Tifel Museum for Palestinian Folklore. The institution stands out in Jerusalem as one of the few private organizations that proudly upholds an Arab and Jerusalemite identity, distinctly separate from the Israeli government curriculum.
Dar Al Tifel Al Arabi operates independently, relying on self-sustenance and the goodwill of donors, refusing any financial support from the Israeli government. This stance underscores its commitment to preserving its cultural and educational integrity. However, these principles also pose challenges, potentially threatening the institution’s ability to continue serving the Jerusalem community.
