Notes
Established in 1952, Rawdat El-Zuhur was founded by Palestinian Jerusalemite teacher Elizabeth Nasir to provide destitute girls with shelter after the 1948 Nakba, at a time when Arab Jerusalem that remained under Jordanian control was flooded with refugees expelled from West Jerusalem and elsewhere. Funded initially by the Anglican Bishop in Jerusalem, the project began as a home for 25 girls of various religions, using part of Nasir’s own home. The shelter evolved into a kindergarten and elementary school (grades 1–6). Today, the school serves around 220 students and employs 15 full-time and 3 part-time staff. It is administered by a nonprofit women’s organization of the same name, Rawdat El-Zuhur.
